How an ENVOL Print Is Made

UPDATED · 26 OCTOBER 2026

ENVOL makes illustrated art prints of places: Paris, Milan and London; the Swiss and French Alps; the Riviera, the Greek islands and the Mediterranean. People often ask how the images are made and what they are printed on. This page answers both, plainly.

They are illustrations, not photographs

Every ENVOL image is an illustration, painted in a gouache-and-oil style. None of them is a photograph, and none is a reproduction of an old poster. Each scene is invented for a specific place, season and hour: the Matterhorn at blue hour in Zermatt, the Eiffel Tower in October light from the Trocadéro, the Faraglioni at high noon off Capri.

How the images are made

We say this clearly because you should know what you are buying.

  1. 1.Concept and art direction, by hand. Each scene starts as a brief: the place, the landmark, the season, the time of day, the people in it and what they are doing, the palette and the composition. A Zermatt print is not "a mountain"; it is a sleigh in the lane, wooden skis on two shoulders and larch chalets lit amber at blue hour.
  2. 2.Rendering with AI image tools. The scene is then rendered with AI image tools, working from that direction.
  3. 3.Retouching. The chosen image is then retouched to correct details before it goes to print.
  4. 4.Upscaling for print. Finally the file is upscaled to a resolution suited to large-format printing, from 30×45 cm up to the largest sizes.

Each collection is art-directed as a whole. The six Alpine Hours resorts share the last hour of a winter day; The Cities share late October.

What they are printed on

ENVOL prints come in three formats.

  • —Fine art print. Giclée-printed with pigment inks on Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm, a textured, matte, archival paper. Unframed, shipped rolled in a protective tube.
  • —Framed print. Giclée on 200 gsm fine art paper behind an acrylic glaze, with a 2.4 mm white mount, in eight frame colours: black, white, natural, gold, silver, brown, light grey and dark grey.
  • —Canvas. 400 gsm canvas stretched on 38 mm bars, ready to hang, with an image wrap, mirror wrap, black edge or white edge.

Portrait sizes run from 30×45 to 70×100 cm (canvas to 75×100 cm). Landscape is available in 30×45, 40×60 and 50×75 cm. Each image can be ordered titled, with the place name at the foot, or clean.

Giclée is inkjet printing at high resolution with pigment inks, the standard method for fine art reproduction. On a textured paper such as German Etching it gives a matte surface with no gloss and a slight tooth you can feel.

Printed to order

Nothing is printed in advance. When you place an order, a professional fine-art print partner produces it in the United Kingdom, the European Union or the United States, whichever is closest to you, and ships it directly to you. Production takes 3–5 business days.

Prints are shipped white-label: no third-party branding appears on the packaging or on the print. A tracking link is emailed when the order ships.

Delivery

Delivery is free to the UK, every EU country, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UAE. After production, transit takes 2–4 business days to the UK, 5–10 to Europe and 7–14 elsewhere. Orders to Switzerland and other non-EU countries may incur local import VAT or duties on delivery.

If it isn't right

Every order has a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not happy with your print, email hello@envol.art within 30 days of delivery with your order number and a photo, and we refund you in full. There is no need to send the print back. Damaged or faulty prints are replaced free.
